SGPA to CGPA
CGPA (cumulative GPA) is the average of your semester GPAs (SGPA). This tool averages all the semesters you enter. If your university weights semesters by credits, multiply each SGPA by its credits, add them up and divide by total credits instead — but a simple average matches most Indian university rules where each semester carries equal weight.
The two formulas
Equal-weight semesters: CGPA = (SGPA₁ + SGPA₂ + … + SGPAₙ) ÷ n — a plain average, which is what the calculator above uses. Credit-weighted semesters: CGPA = (Σ SGPA × credits) ÷ Σ credits — each semester's SGPA is first turned into "quality points" for that semester (SGPA × credits), the quality points are summed across all semesters, and the total is divided by the total credits. The credit-weighted version is the more accurate one whenever semester credit loads differ, since it stops a light 16-credit semester from counting as much as a heavy 24-credit one.
Two worked examples
Example 1 — four equal-weight semesters: SGPAs of 8.0, 8.4, 7.8 and 8.2. Sum = 8.0 + 8.4 + 7.8 + 8.2 = 32.4. CGPA = 32.4 ÷ 4 = 8.10.
Example 2 — two credit-weighted semesters: semester 1 is an SGPA of 7.5 over 22 credits; semester 2 is an SGPA of 8.4 over 24 credits. Quality points: 7.5 × 22 = 165, and 8.4 × 24 = 201.6. CGPA = (165 + 201.6) ÷ (22 + 24) = 366.6 ÷ 46 = 7.97 — noticeably different from the plain average of 7.5 and 8.4 (which would be 7.95), because the heavier, higher-scoring semester pulls the credit-weighted figure up slightly more.
FAQ
Is CGPA just the average of SGPAs?
For most universities with equal-credit semesters, yes. Credit-weighted programs differ slightly — see the worked example above for how to weight by credits instead.
What if my semesters have different credit loads?
Use the credit-weighted formula instead of a simple average: CGPA = (Σ SGPA × credits) ÷ Σ credits. A semester with more credits should count for more of your CGPA than a lighter semester.
Does a semester with a failed course still count in CGPA?
If that semester produced an SGPA, yes, it is included like any other. Some universities exclude a semester from CGPA until an outstanding backlog/fail is cleared — check your own institution's rule before assuming a simple average applies.
