Many Indian boards convert CGPA to a percentage by multiplying by 9.5 (the CBSE formula): % = CGPA × 9.5. Other universities use different multipliers, so the factor is editable above. Always check your own institution’s official conversion rule before using it on applications.

How the ×9.5 formula is derived

The multiplier is not simply "out of 10 becomes out of 100" — that would be ×10. CBSE arrived at 9.5 empirically: when the board studied the actual percentage marks of its highest-scoring students across the five main subjects over several years, the average came out close to 95%, not a full 100%. Dividing that observed ceiling (95) by the top of the CGPA scale (10) gives 9.5, so a perfect 10 CGPA maps to roughly 95% rather than 100%. That is also why the formula is a multiplication rather than a simple decimal shift: it bakes in the gap between a "perfect" CGPA and what perfect students actually scored on paper.

Two worked examples

Example 1 — CGPA 8.5 under the CBSE rule: percentage = 8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75%.

Example 2 — CGPA 7.2 under a university's custom ×10 rule: percentage = 7.2 × 10 = 72%, four points higher than the 7.2 × 9.5 = 68.4% you'd get under the CBSE rule for the identical CGPA. This is exactly why the multiplier field above is editable rather than fixed — the "right" answer depends entirely on which institution issued your CGPA.

Going the other way: percentage to CGPA

To reverse the calculation, divide instead of multiply: CGPA = percentage ÷ multiplier. An 80.75% under the CBSE rule becomes 80.75 ÷ 9.5 = 8.5 CGPA again — the two directions are exact inverses of each other as long as you keep the same multiplier both ways. Mixing multipliers (converting forward with 9.5 and back with 10) will not round-trip to your original number.
